Alzheimer’s Delirium and Dementia Q 13
Before helping a male client who has been sexually assaulted, nurse Maureen should recognize that the rapist is motivated by feelings of:
A. Hostility
B. Inadequacy
C. Incompetence
D. Passion
Correct Answer: A. Hostility
Rapists are believed to harbor and act out hostile feelings toward all women through the act of rape. Displays anger or aggression, either physically or verbally. (The anger need not be directed toward the victim, but may be displayed during conversations by general negative references to women, vulgarity, curtness toward others, and the like. Women are often viewed as adversaries).
Option B: Low self-esteem may also be a contributing factor in victimization. Factors which appear common in those who become date rapists include a tendency to be less responsible or concerned about the effect of their behavior on other people. Rapists often see women as sex objects who are there to fulfill men’s sexual needs. They tend to hold false beliefs, often described as rape myths. For instance, a rapist can believe that if a woman says no, she really means yes and that she is just playing around or challenging him.
Option C: According to Hamby, for men in such cultures, “part of their cultural training is for them to lose touch with their emotions.” They do not know how to deal with their own feelings and even worse, they are not aware of the feelings of others or simply do not care. The link between narcissism and rape seems to be especially strong when repeat offenders are concerned. One of the key characteristics shared by rapists and narcissists is a tendency to dehumanize others
Option D: They tend to have less regard for formal laws. They believe in an adversarial sexual system “women are manipulative and sneaky” and sex roles are competitive. “Men who rape have no experience of relationships based on sharing, reciprocity, mutuality or attentiveness to another person’s needs” (Keller, 1989).
